Essential steps to ensure your ITIN is current for tax filing

An Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) must be renewed if it hasn't been used on a tax return in the past three years or if it's expired. Renewing before tax season ensures smooth filing and prevents delays.
ITINs expire if not used on a tax return for three consecutive years.
ITINs with middle digits 70-88 expired and need renewal.
ITINs with middle digits 90-99 expire on December 31, 2024, unless renewed.
Check the IRS website or your ITIN letter for expiration information.
Pro Tip:
Renew your ITIN as soon as possible - processing can take 7-11 weeks.
You'll need:
Form W-7, Application for IRS Individual Taxpayer Identification Number
Original or certified copy of identity document (passport, birth certificate, etc.)
Original or certified copy of foreign status document if applicable
Supporting documents for dependents if renewing their ITINs
The IRS accepts original documents or certified copies from the issuing agency - not notarized copies.
Fill out Form W-7 completely and accurately.
Check the "Renewal" box in Part I.
Include your current ITIN in the appropriate field.
Sign and date the form - both parents must sign for dependents under 18.
Mail Form W-7 with required documents to the IRS ITIN Operation Center.
Include a prepaid return envelope if you want original documents returned.
Alternatively, use an IRS-authorized Acceptance Agent or CAA for in-person service.
Keep copies of everything you submit.
Start the renewal process early - ideally 2-3 months before tax season.
If your ITIN expires, you can still file your return, but processing will be delayed.
